Rosia Montana! An area of natural beauty. An area of quaint Romanian houses. An area of beautiful Orthodox and Catholic churches. An area with ancient Roman significance. Containing untold artifacts of centuries ago! A museum even stands to admire this!
If you want to go to Romania, Rosia Montana is a place to visit! Not to destroy.
A project to mine gold from that region, first purposed in the communist era, is being considered to go forward which will completely destroy the area.
Cyanide will be used to mine 314 tonnes of gold and 1,500 tonnes of silver in a project that’s owned 80% by foreign non-EU investors.
The government has approved a draft law enabling the mine to be open, Parliament will vote on this law later this month.
Protests in Bucharest reached up to 3,000 people. Protesters also gathered in Cluj. A separate rally against shale gas exploration, drew another 2,000 people onto the streets in the eastern town of Barlad.
Where Shale gas extraction will leave behind a wasteland and polluted waters. Mining could lead to countless archaeological artifacts to be forever lost.
The mining company even admits that large sections of the ancient mines would be destroyed, along with the peaks of four local mountains.
The Romanian media’s propaganda implies that this is needed and wanted for the country when most of the people do not want this. Bribes and corruption are what is helping the projects to go forward.
